Amniotic Fluid

The amniotic membrane is the innermost layer of the placenta and serves as protection for the fetus. The membrane contains stem cells with the ability to differentiate into various types of cells. The membrane surrounds fluid called amniotic fluid which also contains stem cells.

These cells can be obtained from the amniotic fluid without harming the fetus. They are obtained through the process of amniocentesis (sampling amniotic fluid using a hollow needle inserted into the uterus). These stem cells have low immunogenicity (they do not incite a rejection response) and anti-inflammatory properties.

This source of stem cells is ethically sound because no harm is done to the mother or fetus during fluid extraction. If you receive amniotic stem cell injections for your condition, obviously no tissue will be taken from you.

Recently, we've used cryopreserved amniotic derived stem cells and successfully injected them into joints as well as intravenously.
